- Getting Started With the Online Bible
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The Online Bible is designed to make Bible study easier and quicker.
- You can use this program for simple tasks, like finding a verse or
- phrase, or for more involved tasks using Greek and Hebrew. This brief
- introduction can help you start using the program right away.
-
- Running the Program on your CD-ROM
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Issue the following commands to run the Online Bible directly from
- your CD-ROM.
-
- Z:
- cd Z:\OLB
- MM Z
-
- Replace Z with the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.
-
- The AV stands for Authorised Version, another name for the King
- James version or the Common Bible. Select "Version" on the Mini-Menu.
- You will see that the menu bar at the top of the screen has been
- activated and "Find Phrase" has been highlighted. If that is not the
- task you want to perform, use the arrow keys to highlight the
- appropriate menu item. The left and right arrow keys bring different
- pull-down menus into place. Use the up or down arrow keys to point to
- the task you want to highlight, then press ENTER to run it.
- If at any time you want help, press the F1 key and details will be
- provided about what is highlighted. You can return to the main menu
- any time by pressing the ESC key.
-
- Searching for Phrases
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Press the ESC key to activate the menu at the top of the screen,
- then use the arrow keys to highlight the "Find Phrase" position if it
- is not already highlighted. Press the ENTER key and the computer will
- prompt you to "Enter Search Phrase." Type in a phrase and then press
- the ENTER key. On the left side of your screen you will see the verses
- containing this phrase. Use the PgDn and PgUp keys to see all of the
- verses if there are more than fit on your screen.
- If you want to see a particular verse in context, use the up and
- down arrow keys to move that verse to the top of the screen. Then
- press the F10 function key. You can see more of the context by
- pressing the PgDn and PgUp keys. To get back to seeing all of the
- verses which were found, press the F10 key again.
-
- Searching for Words
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Press the ESC key and use the arrow keys to highlight "Word Search."
- The computer will prompt you to "Enter Search Words." To find all
- occurrences of a single word, type that word and press the ENTER key.
- The PgDn, PgUp, up and down arrows and F10 key can be used as
- described in the Phrase Search section to enable you to see all of the
- verses and view them in context.
- The wild card character "*" represents any number of additional
- letters. Thus "watch*" would find "watched," and "watchful," as well
- as "watch."
- You can search for much more than simple words or phrases.
-
- 1. The OR operator is the graphic symbol "|" on the keyboard. Use
- this operator to connect words or phrases together. To search
- for all verses that contain "Jesus" or "Christ", select the word
- search option and enter "Jesus | Christ" (without the quotes of
- course).
-
- 2. The AND operator is the graphic symbol "&" on the keyboard. Use
- this operator to connect words or phrases together. To search
- for all verses that contain "Jesus" and "Christ", select the
- word search option and enter "Jesus & Christ" (without the
- quotes of course).
-
- To find all verses that contain the Strong's number "501" when
- it is translated as "draw out," specify, "501 & draw out."
-
- 3. The AND NOT operator is the graphic symbol "~" on the keyboard.
- Use this operator to connect words or phrases together. To
- search for all verses that contain "Jesus" and not "Christ",
- select the word search option and enter "Jesus ~ Christ"
- (without the quotes of course). This operator is most useful in
- eliminating unwanted verses from a search list. Suppose you want
- to search for all words in the Bible relating to a moth. You use
- the string "moth*" to find all occurrences. Unfortunately, you
- also get all verses containing "mother". Use the AND NOT
- operator to eliminate these verses. Use the search string "moth*
- ~ mother*." For other search operators see the manual.
-
- Finding Verses
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Use the ESC key to get the top-of-the-screen menu and the arrow keys
- to highlight "Passage Display". Press the ENTER key and you will be
- prompted to "Enter Reference." Use the first three letters of the
- chapter you want, except for Philemon, whose short form is Phm and
- Jude, use Jude. First Peter is 1Pe and 2nd John is 2Jo, etc. Joh gets
- the first chapter of John, Joh 3 gets the third chapter, and Joh 3:16
- gets the third chapter, sixteenth verse. Press the ENTER key and the
- text will be displayed on the right side of your screen. The PgDn,
- PgUp, and arrow keys work as usual. The TAB key will toggle you back
- and forth between the right and left columns.
-
- Finding Cross References
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Use "Passage Display" to display New Testament verses, as described
- above, then use the PgUp, PgDn or arrow keys so that the verse you
- want cross referenced is at the top of the screen, then press the F10
- key. The cross-referenced verses will be displayed in the left column.
- Use PgDn and PgUp as necessary to view them all. Pressing the F10 key
- will show you the verse at the top of the screen in context. Press F10
- again to return to the previous display. Use the TAB key to switch
- back and forth between columns.
-
- Greek and Hebrew Words
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Press the F5 key and Strong's reference numbers will be imbedded in
- the text. The F5 key toggles them on and off. The numbers identify the
- Greek or Hebrew word translated by the preceding English word. To see
- the original word and its definition press the F4 key and you will be
- prompted to "Enter Strong's Number." Type in the Strong's number and
- press the ENTER key. You can return to the main display by pressing
- the ESC key.
-
- To Quit the Program
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Press the ESC key and use the right arrow key to highlight "Exit,"
- then press the ENTER key.
-
- There's More
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~
